China in Yorkshire

The China in Yorkshire project is exploring the influence of Chinese history, culture and art on Western Society and showcasing the region's most stunning Chinese and Chinoiserie collections.

 

Museums Sheffield hosted an exhibition of the Grice Ivories collection, a series of pieces from China that were donated to the carvers of Sheffield and the city.  They also worked with the Chinese community to run projects that enhanced the display of the collections.

 

One such project involved the Evergreen Agewell Luncheon Club, made up of elderly members of the Chinese community in Sheffield.  The members worked with artist Suna Xie to produce a memory book, a mixture of art project and oral history that celebrates their lives and the process of becoming part of Sheffield's larger community (see next page and link below for more about the Memory Book).

 

The story of one of those Chinese elders, Mr Yuk Wong, is included here and you can watch and listen to him in the audio and video galleries  (see links below).
